PSA!
I always enjoyed the truth in PSA’s. Although, many not
realize it PSA are agenda setting. Agenda setting theory focuses its
explanation on how news content in the media shapes the pubic beliefs about
what is important in society. (Potter, 2012) PSA’s use the
mass media to address issues in society and uses specific methods to influence
viewers to change their behaviors. PSA’s have found to be highly useful and
have been proven to save lives. The more people the message reaches, the more
lives we save!
I thought that this that the perfect PSA, and young ladies
all over the world would be able to understand and appreciate it. When
evaluating this PSA in an international context. I believed that women all
around the world can relate to this issue, because this isn’t just a country
issue but an issue that affects women all over the world. Women young and old
can relate, in fact this PSA seemed to be for young women but directed to the
parents, and mentors of these young women because they want the older women to
talk to our younger generation about the
unreality of body image in the mass media. This PAS shows the different images
presented in the mass media about body image, then reminded viewers that this
body image isn’t real and that we should talk to our young ladies about that
truth so that they don’t feel they have to meet and stay at the bod criteria,
which may be difficult to meet in healthy ways.
The reason I feel that this PSA can be used and relatable
all around the world is because self-esteem and body image affects women all
around the world. Body image isn’t a cultural or religious issue in the mass
media but a worldly issue which affects women old and young. Also the images in
the PSA are already in the mass media and shown all over the world, therefore
this PSA needs to use the same masses to undo the unhealthy, unrealistic body
images that the mass media already previously created.
We need to change our way of thinking when viewing ads in the mass media. Although, we want to believe that what the media tells us is true, as this PSA says, it’s unreal. Since the mid-nineteenth century, there have been many arguments for and against the idea that photographs are objective renderings of the real world that provide unbiased truth. (Cartwright, 2009)

I already felt this PSA was already relatable in other
countries, but what would make that message clearer, would be to add different
women of other nationality, race, religion and backgrounds to the commercial,
to see how this diverse issue effects every type of women everywhere. Including
these different images will make all women feel that this PSA also relates to
them, and they should also be addressing body type’s images in the mass media
with the children, family and friends as well.
