Entropy and Equifinality

Entropy and Equifinality both impact small groups. Entropy is often what living systems tend to turn out to be. Entropy is defined as; disorganization, stagnation, and chaos. I learned by increasing inputs of energy and information in small groups can prevent entropy (Harris, Sherblom, 31). However, too much energy or information overload can cause disorganization, and chaos. Equifinality is the fact that living systems can take different routes and still end up in the same destination. By using Equifinality in small groups, different groups have a better chance of achieving success, by taking advantage of unique combinations of character and strength of their particular group (Harris, Sherblom, 32). From my understanding both entropy and Equifinality both have an impact in groups; and based on how a groups manage entropy and Equifinality, they may have negative and positive affects on the group. When more information is provided to the group, members can have more input, thus more energy and creative ideas that can provide to the group. With every living system that is successful there has to be some type or organization and order. This may have positive affects on the group, however if too much information is provided, too many people trying to play the same roles, or do the same task can cause chaos, and this is where entropy usually takes place. The fact that Equifinality shows success, proves how being open minded to alternative paths or using others' strength where they may fit best, is all around better for the group in general. Therefore, providing overall success for the group.

  1. Hello! I like your post. You've done an excellent job explaining how entropy and equifinality impact small groups. Your explanation is clear and simple and helps readers (like me) better understand the concept of entropy and eqifinality. Entropy is part of human nature. We all go through choas, disorganization and stagnation. Small groups are complicated in the way that they must be combined of the right things to turn out correctly. Lots of the time small groups have the notion that to get a project done, it is one way or the highway. Well that is impossible in a small group, or a group of any size for that matter. Small group will always have more than idea because there is more than one person in the group. Like you said, this helps creativity grow and from that equifinality fosters. There is no one set way for a group to achieve success and that's the beauty of it. In my opinion that's the best part.
