Social presence is defined as a sense
of immediacy, psychological proximity, intimacy, and familiarity in
communication (Harris, Sherblom, 266). These characteristics allows
members of the groups to develop their social-emotional-relational
communication, and shared meaning. In other words, social presence
establishes that everyone is on the same page. If members aren't on
the same page this may effect the decision-making process and
influence the CMC medium of communication. There are however are some
other effects of CMC on the group process. Anonymity, group size, and
proximity are group characteristics that have effects on the way the
group behaves and influences their decision making process. Large CMC
groups appear to benefit the most from using CMC, as they generate
more ideas per member than do smaller CMC groups. CMC also helps
reduce the effort required to exchange information, thus facilitating
an increase in the amount of group communication and providing a
greater increase in the amount of group communication and providing a
greater sense of group involvement (Harris, Sherblom, 271). When
creating teams or groups remembering; that anonymity, group size and
proximity, influences the participation and communication in CMC
groups.
